Most homeowners researching bathtub refinishing want to know one thing first: what's it going to cost? It's a fair question, and the honest answer is that pricing depends on a handful of factors that change from job to job. This guide breaks down what goes into a refinishing quote, how the cost compares to replacing your tub, and how to avoid common pitfalls when comparing estimates from different companies across the Gulf Coast.
A real, professional refinishing quote should cover:
A quote should be itemized where relevant and clearly state what's included. We send free same-day quotes by email or text, with no deposit required. That last part surprises some homeowners. A few refinishing companies still ask for 30-50% upfront before they'll start work. We've never operated that way.
Five main factors influence what you'll pay:
1. Size and shape of the tub. A standard 5-foot alcove tub is the baseline. Garden tubs, oversized soaking tubs, and whirlpool/Jacuzzi tubs take more material and more labor. Clawfoot and freestanding tubs are typically the most involved because they need to be refinished on all sides, roughly twice the surface area of an alcove tub where only the visible portion gets coated.
2. Current condition. A tub with light surface wear and a few minor stains costs less than one with significant chips, hairline cracks, rust spots from chipped enamel, or a peeling previous refinish. Repairs are usually itemized so you can see what's contributing to the price.
3. Surface material. Porcelain, fiberglass, acrylic, cast iron, and cultured marble each require slightly different prep and coating systems. Cast iron clawfoot tubs typically cost more than porcelain alcove tubs simply because of the extra surface area and prep time.
4. Color change. Changing a tub from harvest gold, avocado green, or pink to crisp white, almond, or biscuit is included at no extra cost on a standard BathMasters refinish. Some companies charge for color changes. That's worth asking about when you compare quotes.
5. Add-ons. Non-slip coatings (recommended for families with kids, elderly residents, and rental properties) and Jacuzzi-specific work add modest amounts to the base price.
This is where refinishing earns its reputation. The cost of "replacing" a bathtub isn't just the cost of the tub itself. A full replacement typically involves:
Refinishing skips all of it. The tub stays in place, the plumbing doesn't move, the surround stays. Your bathroom is usable again within 24-48 hours of completion. In real terms, a refinishing job typically runs well below what a comparable replacement costs (standard 60″ × 30″ tubs start at $425). Refinishing pricing varies widely because the quality of the work behind it varies widely. A few red flags worth watching for:
BathMasters has been refinishing bathtubs across the Gulf Coast for more than 26 years. Owner Mike Tiedman personally handles every quote, every job, and every follow-up. Free same-day quotes, no deposit, 5-year residential warranty in writing. That's how we've operated since day one.
Three steps:
1. Send clear photos or schedule a quick in-person look. Most quotes can be issued same-day from photos showing the tub from multiple angles plus close-ups of any specific damage. 2. Be specific about what you want. Refinish only? Color change? Non-slip surface? Specific chip or crack repair? The more specific the request, the more accurate the quote. 3. Compare quotes apples to apples. What's included, what's the warranty, how long has the company been doing this work?
Pricing varies across the Gulf Coast based on the specifics of your project. What we quote for a tub in Pensacola might differ slightly from a job in Mobile or a vacation rental in Destin, but the framework above holds. If you want a real number for your specific tub, the easiest way to start is a quick photo and a quote request.
